This treatment has, unfortunately, not remained within AA because the Association does not have a medical staff, or any specific leaders within the groups. It is because of this, along with the pressure on Bill W. from the medical community, that the therapy faded away. It did not fade away because of the lack of success. Bill W. and Dr. Hoffer, as well as many others, found great success with this therapy. It should be noted, though , that community and prayer are still very important parts of successful treatment.

In 1960 Bill W. (Founder of Alcoholics Anonymous) met Dr. Abram Hoffer. Soon after this meeting, the subject of Niacin Therapy came into the conversation between the two of them. Dr. Hoffer was getting very good results with schizophrenic patients, along with other ailments, using this Niacin Therapy. This prompted Bill W. to try this therapy on some of the members of AA. In Bill's first trial of thirty people, twenty of those people were able to reverse their alcoholism in two months time.
